Fighting the Swarm

Early Morning, August 30 670 by Kingdom Reckoning

(You're welcome for not posting a picture of a real swarm of rats.)

Draymun's desperate gambit is successful and a large part of the swarm is engulfed in the thick saw grass that springs up at the druid's chant.

But some of the rats still dodge through the thickening growth and fall upon Tom and Draymun. It is a decidedly uncomfortable feeling to be standing amidst a sea of rats as they pass over your feet, scurry up your clothing and bump into you.

Then they begin to bite with their rotted teeth and the pain starts. Dozens of pricks like the tip of a dagger piercing your skin.

Tom takes 6 damage, Draymun takes 2 and you both must make a Constitution save. You each can make an opportunity attack as well.

You hear the rest of the rats coming toward you and some are veering off toward the tents.

It's the party's turn.

(Draymun's Entangle goes off and the swarm must make an immediate save. In reality you are facing 3 swarms so there are three saves. One makes it and moves toward the camp, the other two fail and are immediately stopped.

The swarms win initiative.

The swarm that saved initially must make another save and it fails and thus moves half, but still makes it to the front line of Tom and Draymun.

The two swarms that didn't save at first must also make additional saves. This time they both succeed and can move normally, ending their turn just short of camp.)

  1. Draymun swings at the onrushing rats but his blows are ineffective.

  2. As the rats rush toward him, Tom swings his longsword.

    1. You catch several rats with your swing and they fly off into the darkness.

  3. Twiggy follows Shade's lead and also grabs his backpack and makes haste to his horse. He thinks, "If I can get into a good spot I'll try to help slow down the latter half of the mischief."

  4. Thorvald lowered his head until he was staring at the ground before him. He closed his eyes and focused on his breathing, visualizing each and every enemy before him and breathing in the rage of each and every one. Opening his eyes, Thor was possessed as if a crazy man. "Raaaaaaaaaaaaght," Thor bellowed as he brought his sword in a powerful sweeping arc low in front of him.

    1. Catching up her pack, Rayla runs to her mule, grabs the bridle, jumps on his back and digs in her heels.
(I want to run away and at an angle across the path of the rats.)

    2. Twiggy, about ready to mount his horse but seeing his friends engulfed by the huge swarm, cannot leave them in the lurch. In a loud voice and with perfect pitch, he raises one arm gracefully and sings a song to inspire courage in his friends...

According to the Pathfinder site linked below, Inspire Courage grants a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 competence bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls. If this is incorrect, Sam, I'll delete this post and try something else.

    3. That is a good move and that's how Inspire Courage works. You'll begin singing on your next turn though.

  6. Draymun flails with his shield and hammer as he tries desperately to remove the rats from his body. He swings a powerful blow attempting to clear the way to Kumo, before climbing up the grizzled fur of his companion.

    "Kumo, to Tom's side!"

With that, the bear is off and running, moving back into the camp in an attempt to cut an arc around the mischief before approaching Tom from the rear flank. (( away from the rats, I believe? )) Draymun extends his hammer toward his compatriot.

    "Tom, climb on quickly!"

(( That last part is just RP, nothing mechanical, but it does provide him a chance to mount Kumo with me next turn. ))

    (( Attack Roll (Warhammer) 1d20+4: 18 + 4 + 1 (Twiggy) = 23 ))
    (( Damage Roll (Warhammer) 1d8+3: 6 + 3 + 1 (Twiggy) = 10 ))

    (( Booya. ))

    1. Your hammer cuts a devastating swath across the rats and the swarm seems to diminish.

  7. Tom steps forward and screams, "Rats, I am tired of rats!" Grabbing his sword with both hands, he swings the sword into the mass of rats held in the entangle spell.

    (Attack 12+5=17. Damage 7+3=10)

  8. Shade rides forth and calls upon his reserves of power, speaking the words with an almost demonic inflection and careful manipulating his hands through the ritual gestures while steering his mount with his knees and feet. At the close of his words of power he pulls forth strips of brightly colored cloth from his sleeves and they begin to extend and transform, becoming the bright colors and taking on an immaterial form before stretching forth before him at the clumps of rats swarming and writhing below. Finishing his casting, before he is even sure it has taken effect and not lost its efficacy due to the jolting of his mount, the shadowy Mage leads his mount back to where he started, hoping to place distance between him and the filthy vermin.

  9. Draymun watches as Tom continues the assault on the rats no longer swarming their position.

"Tom, call if you need a pickup, I'm going to flank these buggers!"

With that, he bounds off on Kumo swinging around the left side of the recently attacked rat mischief before swinging his hammer furiously, attempting to scatter as many as possible.

(( Movement: moving to flanking position while riding Kumo (40 ft speed) ))

    (( Attack Role (Warhammer) 1d20+4: 16 + 4 + 1 (Twiggy) + 1 (Height) + 1 (Flanking) = 23 ))
    (( Damage Role (Warhammer) 1d8+3: 4 + 3 + 1 (Twiggy) = 8 ))
