Fighting the Swarm (Round 2)

Early Morning, August 30 670 by Kingdom Reckoning

I rule that since Tom is still standing on the ground at the head of the onslaught (and his Dex is higher than Thorvald's) that the party will go on his initiative.

Party Roll: 10+4 = 14
Swarms Roll: 6+5 = 11

The party may take another turn.

Twiggy's Inspire Courage begins this round so you all add 1 to your hit and damage. Note that Twiggy can only take one additional action this round since he started singing.

  1. Tom drops his sword and draws his warhammer and attacks the swarm in front of him. Swinging with both hands. (I am Pi on the map now, so the one to the left of me.)

    (9+4+1=14; damage if hits 8+3+1)

    1. That is a hit! As a heap of rats boils up, threatening to engulf your shins, your hammer crashes down and smashes many rats.

  2. Rayla turns the mule and rides to Shade. Pulling a torch out of her pack she lights it on Shade's lantern.

  3. Twiggy swings up onto his horse and rides up near Thorvald toward the rat swarm, all the while continuing to sing:

I fell into a burning ring of fire,
I went down, down, down as the flames went higher
    And it burns, burns, burns,
The ring of fire, the ring of fire.

  4. Bolstered by Twiggy's support, Thorvald turns toward the nearest rat swarm with nothing but rage behind his eyes. Pulling back to one side, Thunor's Vengeance swept across the nearest mischief leaving a swath of devastation in it's wake.

    1. (I'm working off of the assumption that Tom and Thor are hitting the same swarm. If that's in error, let me know.)

Your mighty attack cuts another devastating swath of rats down but the swarm surges forward again to fill in the gap left by your blade.

Draymun watches as Tom continues the assault on the rats no longer swarming their position.

"Tom, call if you need a pickup, I'm going to flank these buggers!"

With that, he bounds off on Kumo swinging around the left side of the recently attacked rat mischief before swinging his hammer furiously, attempting to scatter as many as possible.

(( Movement: moving to flanking position while riding Kumo (40 ft speed) ))

    (( Attack Role (Warhammer) 1d20+4: 16 + 4 + 1 (Twiggy) + 1 (Height) + 1 (Flanking) = 23 ))
    (( Damage Role (Warhammer) 1d8+3: 4 + 3 + 1 (Twiggy) = 8 ))

    1. Draymun leans over the side of Kumo and swings his hammer down, bringing it crashing down among the rats. There is a great squeal and the swarm disperses, leaving a great pile of rat corpses.

Shade rides forth and calls upon his reserves of power, speaking the words with an almost demonic inflection and careful manipulating his hands through the ritual gestures while steering his mount with his knees and feet. At the close of his words of power he pulls forth strips of brightly colored cloth from his sleeves and they begin to extend and transform, becoming the bright colors and taking on an immaterial form before stretching forth before him at the clumps of rats swarming and writhing below. Finishing his casting, before he is even sure it has taken effect and not lost its efficacy due to the jolting of his mount, the shadowy Mage leads his mount back to where he started, hoping to place distance between him and the filthy vermin.

    1. Shade's spell goes off without a hitch but the rats seem unaffected by it. You can move back to your starting position without trouble.

      (Rat save 15+2 = 17)

  7. The final swarm of rats moves forward and avoids swarming Tom in favor of swarming into and about the two tents pitched. They chew through the thin fabric easily and begin digging among the packs, sacks and barrels for what food is laying unattended.

At the same moment, you hear a rumbling sound coming from the Northwest, like great amounts of dirt being moved.

    2. Was it your intention to ignite the tents? There is only one rat swarm and it's in and among the tents to the south.

    1. Every round, the stores will "take damage" meaning every round some food is destroyed. If you wade into the swarm, you'll take damage but you can save some of the stores.

You can modify your post however you'd like.

    3. No problem! Now's as good a time as any to ask questions about the swarm.

  10. Thorvald charged after the final mischief with unbridled rage in his eyes. He brought his mighty blade up high, holding it for only a moment, before allowing gravity to aid him in dropping the mighty weapon upon the swarming rats.

    ((Charge: +1 attack, -1 AC
    ((Attack Roll: 1d20 + 7(hit) + 1(mgc wep) + 1 (Charge) + 1 (Twiggy) = 11 + 7 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 21

  11. Following Thorvald, Tom rushes to the new rat swarm but trips and falls over one of the tent ropes.

    2. As Tom slips, he loses control of his weapon and it crunches into Thorvald's knee, dealing regular damage.

(I'll let you roll it since I'm not sure I have the right Tom blog on here.)

    3. ((rolled a 1, normal for the warhammer is d8. I have a +2 str mod, so not sure on that, plus Inspire Courage. So yeah, could be 1 or 4 or something in between))

    4. Thorvald takes an arrow in the knee and shouts, "I used to be an adventurer, and then I took an arrow in the knee."

  12. (Glad I asked. First reply of this post you did 8+3+1? So that would be 1+3+1 damage to Thorvald, or 1+2+1?)

  13. (Isn't a warhammer a 1 handed weapon?)

(Edit: In the rules it's listed as a one handed weapon. I think in the real world, they could have long hafts and be wielded two-handed. If you did that though, I think you'd have to have an Exotic Weapon Proficiency just like with the bastard sword, no?)

    1. (Turns out using a one handed weapon two handed is supported by the rules.)

Thor takes 5 points of damage from Tom's slip.

  14. Rayla watches in horror as Tom's warhammer slams into Thorvauld's leg. She nudges the mule towards him seeing only the wound and its effects. Before the mule can move she looks around and realizes that others are waiting and pulls the reins.

  15. Draymun guides Kumo toward the remaining mischief while attempting to scatter the remaining rats with his hammer, and prevent further damage to the supplies.

    (( Attack Role (Warhammer) 1d20+4: 10 + 4 + 1 (Twiggy) + 1 (Height) = 16 ))
    (( Damage Role (Warhammer) 1d8+3: 7 + 3 + 1 (Twiggy) = 11 ))

  16. Twiggy winced when Thor hit himself in the knee, and then had to surpress a giggle, all of which caused his voice to warble a bit. "Ring of FiiiIIIIIRRRrrreeeEEE!"

But the rats tearing at the tents was unnerving. What if they got to the horses?

Twiggy swung his own horse around and grabbed the reins of the unmounted beasts. He led them away from the mischief of rats and stopped near Shade so that the fighters could still benefit from his song.

He tossed his hair dramatically and sang even louder.

  17. Rayla sends her healing waves toward the party refreshing them before the next attack.
