The Assault

November 16th, afternoon in the year 670 by Kingdom reckoning

You continue along the tree-line, hoping to stay hidden until the last possible moment. You make it 25 feet, to within 30 feet of the dark woods and then the unthinkable happens: Shade stumbles and as he reaches out to steady himself he lets out a grunt. You all pause, breathless, and listen. Your heart sinks into your stomach as you hear a voice call out "they're over here!" and moments later another replies, "I think I see one!"

Please roll initiative.

(This is the map of the whole camp, which of course you can't see yet. The path wanders along and is squeezed between the dense rocks and scree of the foot of the hill on the right and the dense forest on the left of the map.)

    1. Trees and more trees. You can make out the path to your right. Their movement is obscured by the thick forest to your south.

(Also forgive me when I inevitably make the mistake of referring to the camp as being to your North. I really should have made my maps right in the first place.)

    2. Wanna just call it north, even though it is south. Keeps us from messing up?

    1. Do you move through the trees or out on the road? You move 20 feet a round, correct? Yes a bomb can critical.

    2. Jul moves directly toward the voices. Whichever that is.

    3. If you take a double move and go straight south you'll end up in the dark woods (because you halve your move in those woods.) You'll be able to see them and you'll have concealment, but they'll also be concealed because of how thick the growth is.

If you take a double move and skirt the woods, opening yourself up to the possibility of a ranged attack, you'll be able to see them and their defenses and be clear to attack next round.

      Delete
    4. I will double move straight down, through the dark woods. Can I save my crit attack for next round since I cannot attack this round?

    5. Ok, as you approach you see a barrier made of sharpened wooden poles 5 feet in length, leaned on a frame at perhaps 30 degrees. They appear to be light enough for several men to move them if needed. There are three such barriers and they are each around 5-10 feet long. Together they span nearly the entire space between the rocky scree and the woods.

Behind the barrier crouch 6 men, wearing leather armor and holding short bows.

(I'm afraid you can't save your crit, sorry.)

  6. Following on Jul's heels Thor surges forward and makes for the thick woods. Stopping just before the edge of the dense foliage, Thor pauses long enough to allow his comrades to move into a better position before he plans to surge out of the woods and crush the flank of the enemy.

Draymun and Kumo move up, keeping close to Thor and Hamish in preparation of the rushing assault in the coming moments.

  8. There are 4 bandits crouched behind the barrier and they are all looking in different directions, pointing and shouting.

When Jul approaches, one of the bandits spots him. The same for Thorvald. Two arrows fly out.

The first, aimed at Jul, flies well above him and embeds itself in a tree several feet up. The second, aimed at Thorvald, doesn't even make it out of the bow. The bandit, in his haste, pulls the string too far back and the arrow falls out of his bow. He then lets fly the empty bow and hits himself on the arm, numbing his forearm and removing himself from combat for a round.

    (Perception checks 9, 19, 14, 7. To hit: 3, 1. Critical fumble.)

  15. Thorvald succumbs to the rage he'd been holding at bay and lost himself in the haze of his battle fury. 17. Shade peers through the brush witnessing the slaughter. A part of him revels in the chaos and yearns to hear their cries of agony. For a split second another scene plays in his head, again of battle and blood, but it is gone quickly. Shaking his head, Shade doesn't stop to puzzle over those details but instead levels his wand and grants another boon to his companion, Hamish, enlarging him. Shade then remains in the dense brush, close to his other companions.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Suddenly finding himself larger than those around him, Hamish lumbers out of the forest like a bull in a pottery shop. He rushes to the nearest remaining guard and attacks.

((Since we don't have his sheet and know his abilities, I can't say how he'll attack, but if he has a special, he'll use that, otherwise charge. Also, if Josh's target is still alive, he'll attack that one, and if not, he'll attack the next one.))

    ReplyDelete
  19. Draymun and Kumo make short work of the bandit they attack and the remaining 3 bandits look up at Hamish in fear as he shouts and brings his hand axe down on the next one in line. The extra strength his new size affords him is enough to kill the man on the spot.

The two bandits left attempt to run back toward the camp. Hamish tries to hamstring one as he withdraws but misses.

The hoof beats draw nearer and you can see 9 riders cross the stream into the camp and ride toward you. They are 55 feet away, nearly in the center of the small camp. From this distance you see Minx as well as her lieutenant and the dark one. They are flanked by 3 mounted spearmen on either side.

  20. Dolgi moves toward the sounds of battle, finally breaking out of the woods and onto the path. He sees the barricade and his friends on the other side. As he approaches the barricade he sees the riders closing on their position. Yelling at the others to get behind the barricade, Dolgi raise his longbow and sights down the arrow he has knocked. Firing an arrow at the dark one, realizing he is the largest threat from that range, he calls upon the divine guidance provided by Rayla's touch.

"Between Thunor and the Bear God, perhaps we could get the cover of fog to mask our retreat," he paused, momentarily before adding, "and our counter attack".

  23. Nodding to Thor and whistling to Kumo to retreat into the trees, Draymun begins chanting quietly under his breath. Opening his palms to the ground, his hands begin to raise in a slow, deliberate fashion as if pulling something unseen.

Slowly, the moisture underfoot turns gaseous and obscures the view of the incoming horsemen. Once the dense vapor is to his liking, Draymun wastes no time in following his companions to the cover of the forest.

  25. The riders rush forward but, upon seeing the mist spring up, they rein in their mounts and stop 10 feet short of the mist. The three in the middle pull together to converse and the spearmen immediately take up flanking positions facing outwards to guard their leaders.

You can't hear the conversation, but Minx is very animated and it's obvious she's frustrated. The lieutenant again seems to be the calming influence. As they continue to talk, the dark one moves a little closer to the fog as if to inspect it.

As they have their short conference, the runners stumble out of the fog and look around wildly before noticing their compatriots and moving toward them.

  28. Shade advances through the brush, entering the fog and stopping so that his color spray will reach out and strike those gathered around Mynx and in the surrounding region. Pulling strips of colored paper from his pocket he chants softly the arcane words from his scroll before hand and blowing the strips of paper at his foes. He then takes a 5foot step back, still in the fog, but now within the light brush. ((Attack roll 16, add?))

    ReplyDelete
  29. (No need for an attack roll.)

Based on positioning and your desire to be back in the woods at the end of your turn, I ruled that you could target the three in the middle and the spearmen on your side.

The three spearmen all drop their weapons and fall from their saddles.

Minx and her armored lieutenant both go glassy eyed and seem to be watching patterns of light in the air that no one else can see.

(Good work Shade. The spearmen took damage falling from their mounts as well.)

  30. The one wearing dark robes reacts quickly. Seeing his leader and half the guards stunned, he calls out to the runners and they mount the horses the fallen spearmen were riding. But this one was different, and Thor knew it.
